uploaded onto an AR application database in our own channel, poss cloud or
local, with a unique overlay image attached to each trigger image.
We need our own branded app that simply opens the AR reader (not
a ‘take pic’ version, must be recognition) in Android and Apple (we don’t mind
if the application branding appears on the reader). The user then points the
open reader app at the real life trigger in their remote location and launches
the overlay on their Smartphone or equivalent devices.
We can afford to pay very little for each trigger or scan, ideally
it should be free. If a package has a GPS facility this would be ideal. There
are standard packages out there that will achieve this, but we need a developer/you
to set up the app (graphic design already exists) and use an applications ‘SDK’.
We would like to use Aurasma but there are too many
restrictions so that’s a no go equivalent. Some other potential packages might
be Vuforia, Layar, Metaio, Junaio to name just a few. For even more:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_augmented_reality_software
We need to be up and running in 10 days.
We need to ensure you understand the environment and have
good experience with examples.
NB We are not
asking you to build the facility just set us up via SDK and build simple app.

You are to locate and research an entire US County soil survey online using the USDA’s NRCS online web survey tool. Step one is to figure out how to use the tool. Start by thoroughly reviewing this page and the associated links: https://websoilsurvey.sc.egov.usda.gov/App/HomePage.htm
Once you’ve done that you can follow the instructions below to complete your discussion.
After you are comfortable using the tool, then you will identify your area of interest (AOI) using a state and county (the whole county unless the one you are interested has been historically covered differently) that you are familiar with or have an interest in. The survey you select to write about this week will be the same one you will use for your final project. In your post this week you must include, but are not limited to the following:
the specific US County you are using for your AOI
why you selected this site
an embedded map image (can be from the soil survey tool or elsewhere) that shows the location of your AOI
the year of the data that they are using to create the web survey, this will different for most locations but should be fairly recent. (NOTE: This web version is what you’ll use for your final project)
the dates of any old archived (pdf versions) soil surveys from this area (found at: https://www.nrcs.usda.gov/wps/portal/nrcs/soilsurvey/soils/survey/state/)
a discussion about your area with a particular focus on the topic of change over time and how that might (or might not) have impacted the soil thinking about issues such as human alterations to the landscape via agriculture, development, etc., as well as things like climate change or natural disasters. This will obviously require research beyond the survey itself, that is just a jumping off point. This is where the archived survey will be useful, particularly if there is a really old one available that you can compare to now. You’ll want to go beyond these things for your discussion though. You should have a 3-5 properly cited sources this week including the web survey, any archived surveys, and other sources you use for historical, demographic, climatic, or geological information about your area. Don’t forget to cite the source of your map.
And don’t forget to bring all points of focus back to the soils!
