Introduction

The literature review is important element of a paper because it provides a link between studies that have been done and the current project. The literature review provides a context and meaning for the project as it reviews identifies, clarifies, refines, and confirms the clinical or operational question and relates the problem to the theoretical or conceptual framework. The literature review demonstrates that the writer has a command of and is knowledgeable about the current literature related to the proposed problem and the theoretical or conceptual basis for the project. Literature from disciplines outside nursing should be cited as well as nursing literature (preferred).

The literature review is presented in synthesized essay form rather than an annotated list. Do not discuss each article separately but synthesize the content and look for common themes. The synthesis flows logically from one idea to other. Articles with similar findings are discussed in the same section or under the same heading. Avoid use of direct quotations, when possible!!! No more than 1 to 2 quotes per page. Do not use block quotes? Emphasize findings; do not dwell on details of individual studies. A general rule of thumb is to rely on primary sources published within the past five years. The literature review for this assignment should include the following:
