Drawdown is a most creative demonstration of sustainability assessment. Building on over twenty years of collective work on the intertwined nature of the sustainability of social, ecological, and economic systems, this book is a “must read” for anyone interested in a career in sustainability. Or even if you’re not interested in a career in sustainability, I believe these solutions are where emerging markets are. Here’s how this project came about:
“[Project Drawdown] did not make or devise this plan—we found the plan because it already exists. We gathered a qualified and diverse group of researchers from around the world to identify, research, and model the 100 most substantive, existing solutions to address climate change. What was uncovered is a path forward that can roll back global warming within thirty years. It shows that humanity has the means at hand. Nothing new needs to be invented. The solutions are in place and in action. Our work is to accelerate the knowledge and growth of what is possible. We chose the name Drawdown because if we do not name the goal, we are unlikely to achieve it.”
The group at Project Drawdown prioritizes actions and shares many pathways and issues that are currently being worked on and that must be addressed to reverse impacts of climate changes. They have used a Scenarios approach (Links to an external site.), which is important to understand in order to understand how they prioritize and rank the solutions. “Drawdown is based on meticulous research that maps, measures, models, and describes the most substantive solutions to global warming that already exist. It is the most important goal for humanity to undertake (Drawdown, 2017).” For this assignment, you are to go to the Drawdown Project’s Solutions page. (Links to an external site.) Surf around and spend some time getting a sense of the 100 solutions offered, both as identified by ranking (most to least CO2 emissions averted) and by sector.
Part 1 (36 points): Identify three solutions from the 100 listed here (Links to an external site.) that you are most concerned about, ignite some passion within you, and that you would want to pursue. For each of the three solutions you choose:
clearly state the solution, what problem(s) it is addressing, and the sector(s) in which this issue exists;
describe this assessment approach, addressing the reason(s) for its ranking (1-100), how much CO2 it will mitigate; how it addresses social, environmental, and economic factors (the triple bottom line) associated with each solution
explain why each solution you identified is meaningful to you, including any personal experiences related to it, and how you may be able to help advance these solutions.
Part 2 (9 points): After becoming familiar with the 100 solutions and their assessment methodology, provide your personal evaluation of how effective the Drawdown approach (the book, the website) is as a way to advance a global movement towards mitigating climate change. In a well-structured response, address: who the target audience is? How this approach addresses local as well as global issues? How well does it motivate action? How does it compare to other sustainability assessment initiatives you know (e.g. Sustainable Development Goals, EPA climate report, city climate action plans, corporate GRI sustainability reports, etc)?
Grading: 45 points total
To obtain full points, demonstrate you have read the materials in your answers to questions posed and provide critical analysis with references to sources to back your points. For partial points, complete the assignment with little or no critical insights or in accordance with above guidelines. No points granted if not submitted.

The purpose of your final project is to articulate a clear and concise opinion based on the research you conducted in your Research Summary Sheet. Your end project will be written as an op-ed. This submission is worth 150 points or 15% of your final class grade.
An op-ed is a short piece published in a newspaper or magazine but written by someone not affiliated with the editorial board. It expresses the author’s opinion but should be based on research and/or experience. Op-eds are one way you can get your voice out into public debate, sway policy decisions and public opinion, or participate in civil society. For these reasons, writing an op-ed is a useful skill to have.

Next, think about your target publication outlet (sending your op-ed to a publication outlet is optional, but have one in mind so you can write according to their expectations). Who reads this publication? That is your target audience. Take time to read some examples from one of the following possible publications or another of your choosing: OSU’s The Daily Barometer, Corvallis’s Gazette-Times, The Oregonian, Sustainability Times (Links to an external site.), The New York Times, or The Wall Street Journal.
When writing your op-ed, make sure you do the following:

Tell readers why the topic is important.
Offer them your opinion on the issue.
Use research from your summary sheet to support your argument (e.g. describe an article, use examples).
Use descriptions and hyperlinks to cite your sources (see video instructions provided).
Acknowledge alternative viewpoints, and explain why you hold your opinion rather than alternatives.
Try to bring in your personal voice; if you can include a personal story that relates, do so.
Use the active voice (“I”), avoid jargon, and write in short, clear sentences. Proofread!
