Imagine that you have just read an editorial comment in a
fictitious American university newspaper by a man named Joe Shmo about
non-native English speakers and English composition classes.  The article argued that learning English
composition was a huge waste of time, money and energy for these students.  It argued that many foreign students intended
to return to their home country after graduation and had no use for English in
their professional and personal lives. 
It went on to argue that students found it hard to give their full
attention—in terms of time spent and energy—to 
their major, whether they were studying Engineering, Medicine, Law or even
Fine Arts because they were too burdened by their English composition
requirements.  The letter further
suggested that perhaps the university was more interested in taking the
students’ money and less interested in providing the best education. 

Your assignment:  Write a response letter to the university newspaper.  You will refute the claims of author Joe Shmo
by arguing that English Composition is one of the most important classes a
non-native English speaker can take, regardless of his or her major.  Do not use the phrase; “in my opinion” (we
already know that).   

Consider: What might make the editor of this
newspaper want to publish your letter?  You
have a topic sentence already (English is one of the most important subjects a
non-native can take).  Support this
thesis statement with specifics!  Give
details!  Also consider how you might
expect the majority of your classmates to respond to this question and then try
to write something else.

  Mills (2014) remarks,

Some researchers have argued
that reviewing the literature curtails inductive analysis—using induction to
determine the direction of the research—and should be avoided at the early
stages of the research process.  Others suggest that the review of related
literature is important early in the action research process because it helps
action researchers identify underlying assumptions behind their research
questions and helps the researcher refine research questions and embed them in
guiding hypotheses that provide possible direction to follow (p.74).

At this early stage of action research as you prepare to
search for credible sources of information to help you build an action research
proposal, discuss which viewpoint on these two perspectives you lean toward and
why.  How do you intend to use what you learned concerning best practices
for research from the chapter and the web-based resources to help you search
effectively and efficiently?


Three forms of reconnaissance are described including
self-reflection, description, and explanation.  According to Mills (2014),
these activities help clarify what the teacher researcher already knows about
the proposed focus of the study, what they believe to be true about the
relationships of the factors, variables, and contexts that contribute to the
work environment; and what they believe may improve the situation.
Use the “Research in Action Checklist 3 – 2” on page 46 of Mills to perform
reconnaissance of your own.  Format your one- to two-page Word document in
accordance with APA format including the following components as sub-headings:

on your area of focus in teaching and learning, in light of your values and
beliefs; your understandings about the relationships among theory,
practice, school, and society; how things got to be the way they are; and
what you believe about teaching and learning.
Description Describe
