LOCAL CLIMATE PLANNING

Paper details In Assignment 2, we will explore how city governments are addressing climate change with local climate action plans and city greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventories of four major US cities – Portland, Denver, Boston and New York. The Boswell et al chapter on “Local Climate Action Plans” is a helpful resource for navigating local climate action plans, so make sure you read this. Then, read through the four cities’ climate home pages and climate action plans at a brisk pace (review, skim, scan). After you review them all, you are to select one of these cities and write an essay – details below.

City of Portland Climate Action Home Page (Links to an external site.) and Portland’s 2015 Climate Action Plan (Links to an external site.).
City of Denver Climate Home Page (Links to an external site.) and the City and County of Denver Climate Action Plan (Links to an external site.).
Boston’s Climate Action Home Page (Links to an external site.) and Boston 2019 Climate Action Plan Update. (Links to an external site.)
OneNYC 2050 Home Page (Links to an external site.) and A Livable Climate Report (Links to an external site.).
Optional (helpful) article: How can cities plan for climate change? New York shows the way (Links to an external site.).

While you are skimming and scanning, pay attention to and take note of the answers to the questions below. Your answers to these questions are to be integrated into a critical analysis essay focusing on one of these cities and their climate action plan and approach to reducing and monitoring GHG emissions.

What is the GHG reduction target that this city has adopted? Over what baseline (year)? by when (year)?
What are the sources or sectors identified as causes of GHG emissions? This information may be found in a graph (pie chart, bar graph) or in the text of the Plan.
What are 3 main strategies, goals, actions, initiatives (these terms may be different in each plan so clearly state) the City sets in their climate action plan? There are usually many, so select three primary “goals” and answer the following questions related to those you focus on:
What are pathways for GHG reduction identified by this city to address each “goal?”
How do they evaluate whether or not they are making progress towards these strategies and goals? What are the metrics used to monitor progress? This question is most relevant to this course as it is about assessment, measurement, so pay attention to how they are measuring and communicating progress towards reducing GHG emissions.
Critical analysis essay guidelines:

2-3 pages, double spaced, 12 point font
MS Word or PDF document must be uploaded to this Canvas assignment submission portal.
General, suggested format is approximately 5 paragraphs (it may be more if necessary), where:
Paragraph 1 is the introductory paragraph introducing the Plan you have examined, some key features of this Plan and the City, and introduces what aspects you will write about/critique in this essay.
Paragraphs 2, 3, 4 comprise the main body of the essay. Each paragraph should relate to the aspects you introduced in your first introductory paragraph.
Paragraph 5 is the concluding paragraph which concludes with a summary statement and insights about the effectiveness, or not, of the Plan.
See below the Grading Rubric for this assignment. Please note that for full credit, write a complete response in accordance with the guidelines above and offer a unique critical insights and analysis. Student will receive partial credit if their response is not related to course materials and is incomplete based on the guidelines above. Student will receive no credit if their work is not original, or plagiarized, or if the specific question was not answered directly.

MATH 300 STATISTICS

Imagine you are a manager at a major bottling company. Customers have begun to complain that the
bottles of the brand of soda produced in your company contain less than the advertised sixteen (16)
ounces of product. Your boss wants to solve the problem at hand and has asked you to investigate. You
have your employees pull thirty (30) bottles off the line at random from all the shifts at the bottling plant.
You ask your employees to measure the amount of soda there is in each bottle. Note: Use the data set
provided by your instructor to complete this assignment.

Bottle  number     Ounces   Bottle Number  Ounces  Bottle Number  Ounces
1                              14.5           11                     15                21                14.1
2                              14.6           12                    15.1             22                 14.2
3                              14.7           13                    15                 23                 14
4                               14.8          14                    14.4              24               14.9

7                               14.9           17                   16                27               14.6
8                               15.5           18                  16.1              28               14.8
9                               14.8           19                  15.8             29                 14.8
10                             15.2            20                 14.5             30                14.6

Write a two to three (2-3) page report in which you:
1. Calculate the mean, median, and standard deviation for ounces in the bottles.
2. Construct a 95% Confidence Interval for the ounces in the bottles.
3. Conduct a hypothesis test to verify if the claim that a bottle contains less than sixteen (16) ounces
is supported. Clearly state the logic of your test, the calculations, and the conclusion of your test.
4. Provide the following discussion based on the conclusion of your test:
a. If you conclude that there are less than sixteen (16) ounces in a bottle of soda, speculate
on three (3) possible causes. Next, suggest the strategies to avoid the deficit in the
future.
Or
b. If you conclude that the claim of less soda per bottle is not supported or justified, provide
a detailed explanation to your boss about the situation. Include your speculation on the
reason(s) behind the claim, and recommend one (1) strategy geared toward mitigating
this issue in the future.
5. Use at least two (2) quality resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar Websites
do not qualify as quality resources. The body of the paper must have in-text citations that
correspond to the references.
Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your
professor for any additional instructions.
? Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s
name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in
the required assignment page length.
