Thenbegin your preparation for the class discussion by listening to an experiment that investigates a scientific question: what brain functions are involved in moral decisions? What might science perhaps tell us about moral decision of animals and human beings?
Your task for the class discussion is to critically discuss the third exemplary case in the Morality Episode on RadioLab as a moral choice (the mother who has to decide whether she kills her own child to save the villagers from being killed). Does the mother who sacrifices her child act according to the moral law as defined by Kant? Please develop your argument. Please lean on the discussion in the lecture to help you answer this question.
Make sure that your argument consists in a clear thesis statement, premises, and a conclusion and that it is your own work. This means, if you post later than your fellow students, you must have read their posts and add new insights to the overall discussion.
Please include your sources diligently in parenthesis (author, page). If you quote from the lecture at all feel free to just put my name in parenthesis after the quote.
Are humans the only moral animals? Develop an argument supporting your answer being sure to mention what it takes to be considered a “moral” animal.

Paper details Prompt: Clearly our society is divided on what is even true, what is real, what a fact is, etc. This is where Plato and Descartes can come in and help us grapple with the process of knowing and dismissing falsehoods (basically realizing what is true vs what is false). How can Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave” and Descartes’ Meditations be used to help us know what is true from what is false and what is real from what is not real? Consider how they define enlightenment, ignorance, knowledge, certainty, and God. You don’t have to discuss all of these concepts. These are just some ideas. Feel free to bring in Hume as well, though this is not required.
– Format: 1) This can be a formal, analytical essay (intro., body paragraphs, conclusion).
2) Or a fun dialogue (like a script) between Plato and Descartes! Think of it as a hypothetical conversation between Plato and Descartes or something along the lines of “a Platonist and Cartesian walk into a bar/coffee shop…” – what’s their conversation like?!). Think about what their similarities and differences are on these following topics. Try to provide a comprehensive analysis of these two schools of thought.
– Think of your audience as someone who is your age and cognitively capable of understanding this, but who has never read Descartes and Plato before.
Chose One of the Three
