The CDC tweeted “CDC tobacco free” to promote their virtual conference to share the risks of using E-cigarettes and how to address them with teens (CDC, 2019). A study by the American Journal of Public Health (2021) found that there was a 78% increase in E-cigarette use in high schoolers from 2017 to 2018. This sparked public health authorities to respond by increasing the legal purchasing age and restricting the sale of certain products that appealed to the younger audience such as flavored e-cigarette cartridges. This same article examined the correlation between COVID-19 and tobacco use by youths and found a decline. Though they could not rule out the effect that the changes to policies and federal restrictions had on this trend, one of the biggest factors that contributed to the decreased use was limited access to social environments, like schools, where they had resources that helped them obtain the e-cigarettes (Hair et al., 2021). One teacher from the CDC virtual conference shared that her students claimed they did not know how harmful e-cigarettes were. She also states that her students were very interested whenever she pulled up the research and evidence about the damage e-cigarettes can cause (CDC, 2019). I feel this is proof that collaboration between schools and health professionals can promote healthier lifestyle choices in the youths of our communities.
