Throughout the practicum for this course, students must attempt to observe three classroom teachers in middle and secondary schools for 10 hours each, according to the following:
Grades 7-9 classroom
Grades 10-12 classroom
Title 1 classroom
Write a journal entry on each practicum observation identifying and evaluating the effectiveness of literacy strategies used by the instructors to support reading in the classroom. Reference strategies from Classroom Instruction That Works: Research-Based Strategies for Increasing Student Achievement and/or from websites utilized for this assignment.
These practicum observations will be used for the basis of the Comparative Analysis portion of the Benchmark Assignment in Topic 8.
APA format is not required, but solid academic writing skill and a title page are expected.
Complete practicum observation journal entries in the topics in which they are performed and submit all the entries as part of the Benchmark Assignment by the end of Topic 8.
Using your practicum observations, compare and contrast how the observed classroom teachers implemented literacy strategies to support reading in the classroom. Explain how you might facilitate the same strategies in your future classroom.
Select three literacy strategies from your coursework. After critiquing each strategy, create three mini-lesson plans that describe the implementation of the strategies you chose for your specific content area and educational environment. Remember to consider the diversity of your students. Lesson Plan templates are located in the Student Success Center.
Teaching component: In Topic 7, you will teach each mini-lesson with a group of students using your practicum class or teaching one student in a tutoring environment. This teaching experience will be used for the basis of the Comparative Analysis portion of the Benchmark Assignment in Topic 8.

What element of the literacy strategy was most effective to student learning?
What aspect of the literacy strategy was difficult to facilitate? Did it negatively impact the overall success of the lesson? How so?
How did you interpret the level of student engagement during the literacy strategy?
How would you suggest the literacy strategy be modified to make the lesson more effective?
How would you defend your use of or your rejection of this strategy in the future?

Evaluating Research Articles
As we learn more and more about quality research, we learn to spot less than stellar work, as well. So the lesson for this week has us evaluating a few articles to determine the quality of the authors’ work. Each offers an interesting presentation, and the concerns apparent. In recent weeks, we heard from Dr. Patton during a lecture about our intellectual heritage; how we stand on the shoulders of our predecessors (Walden University Center for Research Quality, 2015a). I thought of this as I read the articles and realized that we all must put our best work forward, as this impacts all of academia.
Stadtlander (2015) explains that a quality research article should focus on a social problem and possess a theoretical framework to guide the research project. In addition, the paper must include a scholarly tone and present in an organized fashion; likewise, the reader should not have trouble figuring out what the researchers did and how they conducted their research (Stadtlander, 2015). Finally, a future researcher must be able to replicate the study; therefore, a proper presentation can allow that to happen.
If I were the professor grading these papers, I would give an “A” to Gregus et al. (2020) and a “C-” to Beauchamp et al. (1998). Or I might make Beauchamp redo their article! :o) One of the first things I noticed was the scholarly tone or lack thereof. The Beauchamp et al. (1998) article appears sloppy, disorganized, and unprofessional. While the Gregus et al. (2020) article is quite the opposite, very professional, well organized, clear, and concise, yet covered the necessary information.
Beauchamp et al. (1998) failed to include explanations of terms, literature review, or incorporation of empirical evidence backing their work. Missing also was a theoretical framework, validity, and reliability measurement tools. Finally, Beauchamp et al. (1998) did not include limitations or recommendations for future work. The article was collectively challenging to follow, and if I wanted to replicate this study, I would have trouble as the authors were disorganized and incorporated multiple writing styles. There were also APA errors, as well! ;o/
On the opposite spectrum, Gregus et al. (2020) was beautifully written, well organized, and much more pleasant to analyze. Again, a very professional and organized presentation incorporated a full explanation of the research methodology, a sound description of the process, and an appropriate sample size, as opposed to the previous article with a smaller sample size. Collectively, this article leaves the reader feeling as though they have stepped into the world of academia with respect to the presentation of a high-quality research project.
