Simmel’s piece is a reflection on modern life and the modern city in which it takes place (and that exemplifies its characteristics). The essay sees the city (and by extension modern life as a whole) in a manner similar in some ways to the way that Durkheim, Marx, and Weber see modern life as well.

Sociology on Religion
Paper details Please read Chapter 15 on Religion, apply Conflict Theory, Functionalism, theoretical perspectives on religion, and the sociological approach to religion. Lastly, interpret the meaning of religious space and society. I attached the PDF textbook and a picture of a church for the illustration.

Paper details Field Exercise #5 – Practice Shame Resilience
Complete the worksheet pages for chapter 3 of Daring Greatly, available in Blackboard under Course Documents
Journal three times about upsetting and/or shameful experiences with the intent to capture your thoughts and feelings on paper, and then release them. End each journal entry with soothing, loving words to yourself that suggest a path forward. It’s always useful to go general, for example:
-“I may have goofed up, but this is not the end of the story”
-“So-and-so was rude to me, but our relationship is bigger than one time of bad feelings. We can work it out eventually,” and
-“I don’t need to figure it out now. Things work out over time.”
Practice owning your feelings and being loving to yourself.
Practice “critical awareness,” in other words, notice when you are pathologizing yourself, or someone else, rather than contextualizing the event. For example, when do you say, “I am bad” compared to “I did something bad.” Or, “I always screw up” versus “I made a mistake this time.”
Write a 2-page paper exploring any insights you obtained exploring the nature of shame in the worksheet and practicing shame resilience in your journal entries. Write about the “shame tapes” that play in your head and how you can change them. Appreciate the progress you have made so far. Include the completed worksheet with your paper
Paper details Identify three relationships that might be improved with added vulnerability. As Brene Brown finds, vulnerability is the heart of all true intimacy. Consider which relationships you would like to make more intimate and use your skills in vulnerability to deepen these connections.
Be careful and thoughtful about how you do this. A small step is fine. This is inherently risky so be kind with yourself.
Examples of vulnerability might include:
-speak up when you are a little scared
-share your real feelings with a friend about something that is bothering you
-apologize to someone that you hurt
-own a mistake you made
-share with someone that you care about them
-or something else – share your ideas with your classmates!
Write a 2-page double-spaced paper explaining how you practiced vulnerability and how it went. What did you learn from this? Draw on Brown’s work when analyzing your experience.
