Paper details Summary:

The goal of this exercise is to present your response to the prompts below as a teaching activity. Given the prompts below what explanation would you provide your peers to help them understand the relevant content. Make sure that you respond to all parts of the prompt and carefully read the assignment checklist.

Instructions:

The readings here should be broken up into two distinct parts. Aquinas Summa is broken into three total parts. The first part (or Prima Pars) is concerned with theological ideas and themes of Christian doctrine. The second part is the part concerned with Ethics. It in turn is broken into two parts: Prima Secundae Partis (the first part of the second part, or I-II) and Secunda Secundae Partis (the second part of the second part, or II-II). The is then a third part known as Tertia Pars (part 3). As a consequence, all references to the Summa begin with I, I-II, II-II, or III.

With the exception of the first hyperlink, all of our readings are focused on the I-II and II-II. Each part is comprised of a number of sections known as questions, which are then divided further into articles. So, when our first reading is labeled I.79.12-13 we know that this reading is from Part One, Question 79, and Articles 12 through 13.

What I would like you to do is to write your first teach to learn on the readings from I-II. What is Law? What is Natural Law? What is Eternal Law? How do these types of law relate to each other? Remember these are open ended questions. The goal is to communicate what you have learned to your fellow students. Be as thorough as possible.

Part of the trick is focusing on what Aquinas actually thinks about a particular subject, because of a strange format that he uses for each article. Each article follows the basic pattern of:

Question

Objection 1

Objection 2

Objection 3

On the Contrary…

I answer that…

Reply to Objection 1

Reply to Objection 2

Reply to Objection 3

What you want to focus on is the I answer that part of the article. This is the central claim that Aquinas is making. The Objections are contrary opinions that other scholars or schools of thought might have argued on the subject. The On the Contrary is often a piece of evidence that Aquinas is using to support his own position. The replies to the objections address the contrary opinions held individually and directly. While the objections, response et al are often helpful, if not necessary, to understanding Aquinas, his actual position will be stated in the I answer that part.
