Emblems: gestures that have a direct verbal translation and can stand alone such as the “ok” sign.
Illustrators: gestures that complement our words such as pointing when giving directions.
Regulators: gestures that may prolong or terminate the conversation such as looking at your watch, walking away, or nodding and leaning forward.
Adaptors: gestures that make you feel more comfortable in a communication situation such as twirling your hair or tapping your fingers.
Affect Displays: facial expressions motivated by emotion such as a smile or frown.
In this lesson, you will venture out and observe the people around you. Tune out what they are saying and then sit back and watch. Take notes on what type of gestures (emblems, regulators, illustrators, adaptors and affect displays) are they using? How often do they use each one? Are they aware of these gestures? You will then use your notes to write a typed two-page essay describing what you witnessed. Please let us know where you were, the mall, Starbucks, work, etc.. and who was involved, two men sitting at a table…
Describe at least ten separate gestures.
What are they conveying? How many repetitions?
What are the circumstances?
Please submit your essay to this dropbox and include the following:
At least two pages typed– MINIMUM of 675 words
Paragraphs, not bullets
Include nonverbal terminology
Reminder: All written work must comply with standard English rules, such as proper capitalization, grammar, and spelling. The assignment must be submitted by the deadline listed on the calendar.
Note: Even though you will see a statement giving you the option of copy/paste or file attachment, you are required to attach the assignment in MS Word format.
Paper details You will compose an essay, written in APA format and amounting to 3 or more pages (not counting references), that describes interpersonal communication phenomena. Your essay will basically include the following:
1.An explanation of findings about particular IPC phenomena, citing information in research papers you have used for the IPC Presentation assignment.
2.Synthesis of those findings with what you have learned from the text and class discussion, as well as your own experience/perspective. This means you will need to cite the textbook. Additionally, you may relate material from other sources (e.g. news articles).
3. Conclusions you have drawn or questions you think are worth exploring regarding interpersonal communication.
Add information from new sources not in your presentation (though some of your presentations used many sources already, which is great, and I’ll keep this in mind; the bottom line is you need to back up your question/claim well).
Make the final claims/questions very clear, with organized logic about why current findings lead to that claim or question.
Elaborate enough that the reader gets a clear picture of what communication exemplifies the phenomenon under study (e.g. what messages qualify as “relational”?).
Do not waste words or belabor information not relevant to the phenomenon under study.

Did the labor movements of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era succeed in improving the lives of working people. If yes, how? If not, why not? Did the U.S. government generally support the working class or employers? In what ways?
Paper details Begin with a strong thesis statement followed by relevant evidence from the readings and lectures. Cite Corbett as (Corbet pg.#) or Foner as (Foner pg.#); cite the Zinn documents by the author of the document of title if the author is anonymous, for example (Ginsburg 454); and cite the presentations/lectures as Colling lecture/slide #, e.g. (Colling 5/42).
In addition to the Foner text and lectures, use at least three primary documents for evidence. These can be found in Zinn. They are your choice, but you must use the primary documents as significant sources to make your case.
It must be double spaced and typed in 12 point Times New Roman font.

Paper details This is order includes two assignments that should be completed concurrently: a literature review and the outline for a more formal literature review to be completed at a later time. This work should be written at the doctoral level. The literature review should demonstrate a synthesis of information rather than a report. The literature review should establish the purpose for a future applied research project. All work should be completed per APA 7. The documents for this assignment include both assignment directions, both assignment rubrics, a sample outline, samples of prior reviews and comparisons of some of the references, the overview sample for the project, a reference page, and copies of all references on the reference page. The reference page has several highlighted references. The highlighted references can be used as necessary to fully complete the assignments, but they should not all be used. All of references that are not highlighted should be used. The overview paragraph includes the general topics for the literature review and outline. These can be adjusted slightly to fully accommodate the literature review. Although the separate directions are provided for the literature review and outline, I am requesting that these be completed as one assignment. The literature review should be 3 pages and the outline should be 1-2 pages. I do not need a title page, but a completed reference page is required.
